The Turkish Cypriots have clearly demonstrated, they've had enough of outside politics from the 'mother' who only cares for her own selfish interests, and nothing for the people. This is a God-given chance to create peace & prosperity for ONE PEOPLE,
THE CYPRIOTS
Irrespective of whether they are Greek/Turkish/Armenian/Maronite/Latinos. They are Cypriots. There is ONLY ONE IDENTITY on this tormented Island which suffered so many Captors, such as the Hyksos, The Peoples of the Sea, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Crusaders, Franks, Venetians, Turks in the 1570s, and, finally the English in 1878.
The interest in the island was/is due to its geographical position, being the meeting point for 3 Continents. Europe, Asia, Africa. Its people were never warrior-like, and that made them an easy target for powers with weapon & armies!! Through all that, the Cypriot, existed on the island for 10,000 years, & can be traced back to Noah's son KITTIM, in the Bible. The Hellenes settled here approximately 3200 years ago, and that was when the Cypriot was Hellenized, took on the Greek identity and, subsequently, the Orthodox religion, but, they still remained Cypriots. When Turkey (the penultimate Captor) occupied Cyprus for 308 years, many Turkish people decided not to return to Turkey, but to settle on the island. This made them Cypriots.
All these years, we managed to live peacefully until other powers stirred things up for their own interests and, we got the so-called 'guarantors'. That agreement as I recall, was TO GUARANTEE THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE COUNTRY, NOT TO INVADE AT WILL AND THEN DICTATE TERMS FROM THE POINT OF THE GUN 40 years later, as Turkey is doing. Makarios was the legal Government. When, during the Greek Junta's reign, Makarios was overturned illegally, Turkey invaded as 'guarantor' power to 'reinstate' Cyprus legal Government....yeah right!! Now Mr. Erdogan does not 'recognize' the legal government of the Cyprus Republic, tells everyone around what to do, like saying the agreements between Greece, Egypt, Cyprus are not legal without Turkey's say so, and, the other day, demanded the Emir in Kuwait, who was hosting a party in his honour, does not allow Cyprus's Ambassador to attend!!!! Very civilized and very obviously a proponent of 'let's have piece' not peace!!
The people of Cyprus, & I am referring to the whole, not to any community or creed, were stirred by higher powers, taking advantage of the Greek/Turkish Cypriot 'problem' which had not existed, until the powers that be created it, leading to hatreds & people being killed on all sides. In fact, until then, people lived peacefully, going about their own business, following their own religions.
Now, Mr. Akinci, as the reasonable man I believe you are, it is in your hand to help bring about lasting peace on this island. And peace will not be achieved with Turkey maintaining 40,000 Turkish soldiers in the North, nor with Mr. Erdogan's attempts to turn you into his puppet for appearances sake...you know....the problem is supposedly between two communities, therefore, talks & solutions must be found by them...as long as we all do as Mr. Erdogan wants.
Cyprus belongs to its people and NO ONE ELSE. Certainly not to any 'mother'!! Time we all grew up and left our 'mothers' apron strings!!! Surely, all other invaders of Cyprus left people behind who took on the Cypriot identity & none of them, has ever made any such demands as Turkey is making!!
Mr. Akinci.....Don't allow anyone to make you his mouthpiece...but rather, be your own mouthPEACE!!!
